Your guide to teaching Business English abroad

Your guide to teaching Business English abroad Most new ESL teachers start out teaching children as part of a school system, or a mix of children and adults at private English conversation schools, but experienced teachers with flexibility in their work schedules and valid work visas often move on to the lucrative world of freelancing in Business English abroad. Read this: The ultimate guide to teaching English abroad But what is Business English? To be sure, many adult students take English classes to support business activities and advance in their careers, but Business English classes offered by teacher-dispatch companies have several important differences that set them apart from the offerings of conversation schools. How is teaching Business English different from regular ESL lessons? First, classes are typically held at corporate offices or factories, rather than at schools, and a group of employees gathers for a lesson in the middle of their work day or after they’ve punched the clock. For the first lesson, a representative of the dispatch company will come to make introductions, but after that instructors are largely on their own, checking in with their managers primarily for feedback and student assessment. The corporate setting also means that teachers are often expected to dress more formally than at a conversation school, at least as formally as the students attending their classes, although this isn’t always the case for classes at factories. Second, it is rare to have unmotivated, English-as-a-hobby students in these classes. Employees are typically enrolled in English training with a particular goal in mind, ranging from an upcoming international business trip to a growing need to write English emails to clients and customers abroad. Like anywhere, some students are forced to study or are exhausted from their work, but typical corporate students are eager to learn because they know that their future work success relies, at least in part, on their ability to absorb your lesson. Sign up to Teach Away today for access to the latest teaching jobs around the world. Third, and most importantly for would-be teachers, corporate clients pay for results. Hourly wages at Business English dispatch companies can be two to three times higher than at a typical conversation school, although most companies hire teachers for 1 to 3 hours, once or twice a week. For instance, entry-level positions in Japanese conversation schools pay about $110 a day ($2,200 a month), whereas a one-hour dispatch lesson can earn $50. Day-long business English seminars pay around $170, and one-week intensives for new hires are common as well - a great way to make money quickly. How should I teach a Business English class? Truth be told, English is English for beginners, and the only quantifiable difference would be the workplace-related examples for lessons on basic grammar and vocabulary that can be found in any Business English textbook. The foreign student character learning the basics in America with a homestay family, for instance, is replaced with business people traveling abroad and meeting foreign colleagues or customers. Small class sizes, typically one to six, mean that you’ll have a clear idea of each student’s strengths and weakness, as well as their educational goals. You’ll be able to tailor classes to answer particular concerns, such as understanding emails or making introductions when on their first trip abroad. This individual approach means that students and their bosses can measure English ability improvement more precisely than in a regular class. Intermediate students will want to learn how to give basic presentations, explain factory processes, take care of foreign visitors, and write polite email correspondence, in addition to the usual grammar and vocabulary. Advanced students tend to be in private classes and have very specific needs. They will often want to have more say in what each class covers and may want to practice delicate negotiations, have your insight on Western business customs, or receive feedback on a presentation they have been developing. It is particularly important not to merely trudge through the chapters of an advanced level Business English textbook because many of the topics, ranging from dealing with difficult business partners to answering questions after a presentation, will not be applicable to every student. A flexible, tailored approach works best with private, advanced student classes. Goals aside, many of these students are also delighted to take a break from their regular work pressures and joke around in a foreign language with their coworkers. The same teacher’s charisma used in every other class is just as important here. What if I don’t have any relevant work experience? Don’t be put off by a lack of direct experience if considering taking a business English position. Your native speaker’s instincts and TEFL training will go a long way, especially when complemented with textbooks for a business English environment and plenty of time to prepare. Teachers aren’t expected to understand the inner workings of the factories, shops and offices they will teach in. On the contrary, helping your students explain the nature of their work is an excellent starting point for a new contract. Additional courses, such as a Specialization in Teaching Business English, can bolster your skill set too. Where can I find Business English jobs abroad? Business English classes can be found anywhere international business is being conducted, most often in large cities with bustling economies. The greatest demand is typically found in wealthy countries with lower than average English ability, highly globalized economies, and major international corporations. Japan,South Korea and Taiwan are all hungry for instructors, as are Germany and the UAE. As for finding a Business English gig, focus on picking up a class here and there on a freelance basis: full-time positions (and visa sponsors) are rare. Business English dispatch companies want to hire experienced teachers with references in the same country, even if they don’t have TEFL certificates, because each corporate client represents far more income than a single student in a conversation school. Our ESL job board is a good place to start your search, but if you are already working abroad with a valid visa, check local job listings for Business English dispatch companies looking for teachers to fill short contracts. A good dispatcher can keep sending you a steady stream of contracts for years of work to come. What about teaching Business English online? For those teachers who would rather stay home, online Business English classes also represent an opportunity to earn more money. Online teachers who successfully market themselves as Business English instructors for serious business people can command top dollar through referrals; if you’d like to dip your toe into the world of English for a corporate context, some online teaching companies are specifically aimed at this market with one-on-one classes. Global English, for instance, connects teachers with students with a minimum time commitment of ten hours a week. If we haven’t sold you on the idea yet, one final thought: teaching Business English reveals a totally new side of a country’s culture. By working closely with the titans of industry, you’ll develop new insight into what your adopted neighbours do with their daily lives and how local industries contribute to a nation’s character. It’s a fascinating world, it’s highly lucrative and it’s a great opportunity to develop your own teaching skills. What more could you ask for?

Fullerton College Tutor A work-life balance in college

Fullerton College Tutor A work-life balance in college Tips from a Fullerton College Tutor: Establishing a Work-Life Balance in College Tips from a Fullerton College Tutor: Establishing a Work-Life Balance in College A work-life balance is becoming more important to a young adults well-being yet, at the same time, more difficult to achieve. Its important to remember that a work-life balance is something that is learned and refined over time with consistent practice. College students cant just wake up and set a goal to have a life balance and achieve that goal in a couple of weeks. There are a few things students can learn from the previous generations in order to help them enter the working world prepared to set aside time to relax and unplug. Below are five work-life balance lessons from a private Fullerton academic tutor. 1. Technology is both your friend and your enemy Technology can keep us connected anywhere. It allows us to chat with colleagues and get essential work done while traveling. It lets us take a work-at-home day when we are not feeling 100%. It also prevents us from having a chance to disconnect and enjoy our personal lives. Most current college students have been using technology to enhance their lives since elementary school and haven’t experienced a time before constant connections. However, working adults who experienced a pre-internet world can offer some great advice on how to practice balance. First, work ends when you leave the office. Unless you are self-employed or run a business, you should be able to shut off your work email when you leave at 6 pm. If you are in school, study ends when you have successfully completed an assignment. Set a goal to unplug when you dont need to be online (READ: 5 Reasons to Learn a Second Language in College). 2. Family and friends are best kept in person Technology is beneficial in that it allows us to keep in touch with family and friends who live far away but it becomes a detriment when we are texting a friend or roommate one room away. If friends are right next door make an effort to get up and go visit them in person. When people spend time together face to face, they create better relationships and experience more genuine communication. Technology should keep us together when we cant see each other, not all the time. 3. Work has a definite end time Although not everybody can stop working at 5 pm, its crucial that work has a definite end time. The same holds true for college students. Studying until 3 am won’t help a student perform well on a test because their mind is exhausted by the morning. Rather, pick a reasonable cut off time. Perhaps studying until 8 or 10 pm is reasonable for a student who goes to bed at midnight but an early bird may need to call it quits by 7 pm. Outside of finals week, students should also schedule in me time or down time at around four hours a day. This time might be spent cooking a delicious meal, going for an afternoon run, or having a cup of joe with friends. The specific activity is irrelevant as long as the student isnt thinking about school and assignments during those hours. 4. Ask yourself, can it wait until tomorrow? (and if not, why not?) Many workers and students will think of several last minute things that need to be done right now, and simply cant wait, or at least it feels that way. People who are working until the wee hours of the morning scrambling to get things done usually wake up tired and unprepared to start the next day. Its essential to figure out why these things just cant wait. Did you forget something thats due tomorrow morning? Are you usually running late in the morning hours? Or, is it something that could absolutely wait until the morning but you simply cant relax until its done? A little bit of stress can keep people on their toes and help them stay motivated. However, if non-essential tasks are keeping students up at night, they won’t experience a work-life balance. Try using a checklist to go through earlier in the evening to prevent forgotten tasks or create an electronic secretary to remind you of important things that are due by noon. In this case, more organization usually equals less anxi ety (READ: Irvine College Tutor Tips: 5 Ways to Boost Your College GPA). 5. Learn to love the vacation reply In order to have a work-life balance, people need to have vacation time. Its really tempting to check email on the weekends and spend unnecessary hours worrying about academic tasks. Students who are on break as well as employed adults should learn to love the vacation reply. If you work Saturdays and have Tuesdays off, let people know that and avoid work-related materials on that day. Communicate to people that you will get back to them when youre in the office so they know you are on top of things but need to enjoy that day off. 6 Ways to Make the Most of Your Last Semester of High School

6 Ways to Make the Most of Your Last Semester of High School If your first instinct is to wish away the days until high school is over and college begins, think again. Even if your standardized tests are done, your college applications are turned in, and you possibly know the university you are going to attend, your last semester of high school can still be one of the most important! Make sure you maximize it. 1. Plan ahead With the right preparation, you can ensure that every move you make in college, from the moment you step on campus, helps you reach your goals. Take your last semester of high school to look at the different types of degrees your future college, or some of your college choices, offer. If you are certain of the school you are attending, research degree requirements and start a very rough schedule of the classes you will need to take to graduate. 2. Refine your study skills College work will no doubt be more difficult than that of your high school classes. Instead of blowing off assignments your last semester, consider them practice for the more difficult work that lies ahead. Even if your teacher provides notes in class, try taking notes on your own and finding which style works best for youthis may help you learn how to take notes in a college lecture later on! Practice studying for tests in different ways, or polish your essay skills with an essay editing tutor so you are prepared for your future classes. 3. Expand your interests Regardless of what school you plan on attending, the opportunity for campus involvement will be plentiful. To make the most out of your college career, you will want to get involved on campus and find a passion. If you havent found your passion yet, or if youre interested in expanding your interests, use your last semester of high school to explore your options. Try attending some after-school club meetings or playing on a sports team either for your school or for an outside league. Take a class that seems intriguing, even if its out of your usual realm of experience. 4. Find a part-time job The truth is, college can be expensive. Between your books, food, and brand new living expenses, the extra costs add up. Use your last semester of high school to build up your savings so you can enter college with some extra spending money. As an added bonus, try to find a job that is related to the field you want to study in collegethis can help you get some early experience and decide if it is the right choice for you. 5. Get some real-world skills For most students, their first year in college is the first time that theyve truly been on their own. While there is no shame in not knowing how to do your own laundry, it can only help to learn early (hint: dont mix whites and reds!). Brush up on some basic cooking skills while you are still at home so you will be prepared to make your own meals. If you will have your car on campus, learn some basic repair skills such as how to change a tire or check tire pressure. Your parents or guardians may only be a phone call away while youre at school, but its best to avoid a major freak-out by learning these skills while you still have your family right next to you. 6. Make the most of your time with friends and family Whether you are leaving the state for school or staying in your city, big changes are going to come. Use your last semester to enjoy the time you have with your high school friends. Although you will make tons of new friends while attending college, your high school friendships are irreplaceable. Take this time to also appreciate your family. Many college students will tell you that once you are away from home, you really realize how much your family matters. Dont wait until your first semester of college to recognize this! Think of your last semester of high school as a chance to complete your lasts and start some firsts. Make the most of your last semester by enjoying it with family and friends, but also use this time to prepare for your college career.
